How the Welsh Fight for Their Language (Podcast)

For the Welsh, a small nation from the United Kingdom, preserving the language has been a long-standing fight for their rights to use it in every aspect of their lives. Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society) has been striving to achieve this goal since 1962. They are well known for using bold methods to pursue their aim: protests, blocking road traffic, climbing and disabling radio masts, demolishing offices of the Tory party.  Over the years hundreds of their members have been arrested or sentenced to jail, making it the largest protest group in the United Kingdom since the suffragettes. Cymdeithas has contributed to introducing bilingual road signs, a Welsh-language television channel,  achieving official status for the language, creating a Welsh higher education college and much more. One of their members is Heledd Williams who has told us more about the linguistic situation of Wales.
